Auto FAQ
Answers to common car ownership, parking and road rules questions in India.
How do I transfer a car RC to a new owner in India?
Both buyer and seller apply through the RTO with Form 29 & 30, NOC (if interstate), PUC, insurance and ID proof. The RTO updates ownership in the VAHAN database. Allow 2–4 weeks depending on the state.
What is PUC and how often do I need it?
Pollution Under Control certificate is mandatory for all vehicles. Petrol cars typically need renewal every year; newer diesel vehicles may have longer validity. Driving without valid PUC can attract fines.
Is FASTag mandatory on highways?
Yes — FASTag is required for toll payments on National Highways. Without it you may pay double the toll at some plazas. Link your tag to an active wallet or bank account.
Third-party vs comprehensive insurance — which do I need?
Third-party cover is legally mandatory and pays for damage you cause to others. Comprehensive adds own-damage cover for theft, accident and natural calamities. See our car insurance guide.
How can someone contact me if my car blocks them?
Use a Sampark QR tag on your windshield. Anyone scans and reaches you via masked call, SMS or WhatsApp. Read our full guide on contacting parked car owners.
How do I check pending traffic challans?
Use the Parivahan e-Challan portal, mParivahan app or your state traffic police website. Enter your vehicle number or challan ID. See our step-by-step challan guide.
What does the number on an Indian licence plate mean?
The format is: State code · RTO district number · Series letters · 4-digit number (e.g. DL 01 AB 1234). BH series plates work nationwide. Read our number plate guide.
When should I service my car?
Follow the manufacturer's schedule — typically every 10,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first. Oil, filters, brake fluid and tyre rotation are the basics. Delayed service hurts mileage and resale value.
Can I park on the road outside my house?
Public roads are not private parking spots. Rules vary by city — some allow parking on one side, others require permits. Blocking driveways, fire hydrants or no-parking zones is always illegal.
How is car loan EMI calculated?
Banks use the reducing-balance formula on principal, annual interest rate and tenure in months. Use our free car loan EMI calculator for instant estimates.
What fuel efficiency should I expect in city driving?
Real-world city mileage is usually 15–25% below ARAI figures. Track yours with our mileage calculator and compare against local fuel prices.
Is it legal to share someone's vehicle number online?
Posting a number plate to shame someone can violate privacy laws and platform policies. For disputes, contact security, RWA or traffic police through proper channels.
